Tips on how I do my KCQs

key concepts and questions…

If I can be honest, I have never heard of KCQs before. So of course, my first question was “what in the world are KCQs”. ACCT11059 is one of my first four units of my first year ever in uni, so all of my knowledge, initially came from High School. When I was in high school, all of my writing was predominately analytical other than the occasional english monologue. I never thought I would be challenged in my writing like the way I have with my KCQs in this unit. While I thought writing analytically was tough, I have actually realised from this unit that it is so much easier to write an essay with a thesis supported by clear cut facts than it is to explain how I understand concepts I have never heard of up until now. How do I write to appropriately articulate my questions, concerns and my understanding of the concept. Essentially, I believe that it is so much harder writing freely as oppose to writing with a structure and plan.

So, I thought I would give a couple tips on how I manage to do my KCQs.

Firstly, I always have a notebook next to me while I read through the chapter. That is so when ever I have a question or something I find interesting about the chapter, I can write it down so I can remember to talk about it when I start writing.

I typically try to read over the content twice or more if I don’t understand it, however, Martin is very good at explaining concepts so I don’t often have an issue with misunderstanding the concept. In fact, I often find it hard to write questions that I have in some of the chapters because I don’t have trouble understanding, thanks to Martin.

If I have trouble writing I look at other peoples drafts to get my head into the mind space. But also, some of their questions pokes at some questions I did not even realise I had.

Finally, I typically just write what comes to mind at first. I let it all out and do not restrict myself in any way. At the end I will go through and fix it up by making sense of my sentences and cutting out the unnecessary details.

I hope these tips have helped in some way. GOOD LUCK!
